As a holistic obstetrician at The Portland Hospital, I prioritise both advanced medical screening and respectful, individualised care. A Vasa Previa ultrasound scan is a vital tool in identifying a rare but serious condition during pregnancy — where fetal blood vessels cross or run near the cervical opening, unprotected by the umbilical cord or placenta.

Please note: Vasa previa is not currently included in the UK’s Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme (FASP). Despite its risks, routine screening is not yet offered in standard NHS antenatal care.

What is Vasa Previa?

Vasa previa occurs when unprotected fetal blood vessels lie too close to the cervical opening. These vessels can rupture during labour or membrane rupture, leading to rapid fetal blood loss. Early detection through ultrasound is key to ensuring a safe delivery.

How is It Detected?

- Typically diagnosed during the second-trimester anatomy scan or a targeted scan between 16–24 weeks.
- Transvaginal ultrasound with colour Doppler is used to clearly visualise fetal vessels and their position relative to the cervix.
- Risk factors include low-lying placenta (placenta previa), velamentous cord insertion, or multiple pregnancies.

Why Early Screening Matters

When diagnosed early, vasa previa can be managed safely with careful monitoring and a planned caesarean birth before labour begins. Undiagnosed, it can lead to fetal distress or stillbirth. Our focus is on early detection and personalised birth planning.

Dr Sri is a recognised authority in placental disorders and offers expert Vasa Previa screening as part of her dedicated placenta clinics at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
